『墨流し』は、水と墨の流れから生まれる一回性の模様を観察するために構成されたインスタレーションである。
フレームに支えられた水面には、常に一定の流れが保たれているが、その流れは微細な乱れを含み、完全に同じ状態には決して戻らない。そこに墨が落ちると、滲みや裂け、揺らぎ、渦といった変化が現れ、毎回異なる模様として立ち上がる。

本作では、この現象を繰り返し立ち上げるために、水槽や循環装置とともに、墨を水面に届けるロボットアームをひとつの部品として組み込んでいる。ロボットアームは、作者の手の動きをあらかじめ複数パターンとして記録し、その軌跡を反復する。しかし、その動きは水の状態や時間の経過によって徐々にずれ、同じ軌跡をなぞろうとしても、結果として生まれる模様は決して同じにはならない。

ここで扱っているのは、完全なランダムではなく、「同じことをしても同じ結果にならない」種類の偶然性である。装置は条件を揃えようとするが、水と墨の振る舞いはそれを裏切り続ける。その差異が現れる場そのものを作品として提示している。

『墨流し』は、自然の流れを装置として再構成することで、作為と非作為、制御と非制御のあいだに生じる模様の変化を見つめる試みである。観客は完成されたイメージではなく、現象が生成し続ける過程そのものと向き合う。

Suminagashi is an installation composed to observe the one-time-only patterns that emerge from the flow of water and ink.
The water surface, supported by a frame, is kept in a constant flow; yet this flow always contains subtle disturbances and never returns to exactly the same state. When ink is dropped onto the surface, changes such as bleeding, tearing, wavering, and vortices appear, each time giving rise to a different pattern.

In order to repeatedly bring this phenomenon into being, the work integrates a robotic arm—alongside the water tank and circulation system—as a functional component that delivers ink onto the water surface. The robotic arm reproduces several movement patterns recorded in advance from the artist’s hand. However, as the state of the water shifts over time, these movements gradually drift. Even when the arm attempts to trace the same trajectory, the resulting patterns are never identical.

What is addressed here is not pure randomness, but a form of contingency in which the same action does not lead to the same outcome. The apparatus seeks to align conditions, yet the behavior of water and ink continuously undermines this effort. The work presents the very site where this discrepancy emerges as its subject.

By reconstructing natural flow as an apparatus, Suminagashi examines the transformations that arise between intention and non-intention, control and non-control. Rather than confronting a completed image, the viewer encounters the ongoing process through which phenomena continue to be generated.
